I start from the following premise:

- Ukraine was at peace with Russia from 1991 until 2004; then

- Ukraine was at restless peace with Russia from 2004 until 2014; then

- Ukraine and Russia were at not quite peace from 2014 until 2022;

- There were multiple signed treaties and agreements and documented attempts to avoid war through negotiation by Russia with Ukraine (and others) throughout that time, particularly from 2014 till 2022.

From that premise, the West's particularly the US' position appears to be to again - as in Afghanistan in the 1980s - to draw Russia into a long, draining war in Ukraine. i.e. a version of a "forever war"
