I should have written, "The Habsburg empire" as the Austro-Hungarian empire was only 50 years. The Habsburg Empire, which included the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was around for 800 years. See the link below.

That does not change the fact that the Austrian empire was separate from the German empire. Both Germanic, but both with distinct identities. Austrians and Germans were not always allies. The 1866 Austro-Prussian war is an example of this.
