I saw Carpenter's "The Thing" as a teenager. Great film that stuck with me over the decades. The line about not staying "tied to this fucking couch!" is classic.

I got my wife (non-American) to watch the recent remake on Netflix a few weeks into lockdown. It was not nearly as good as the 1982 version, precisely because the elements of distrust and ambiguity were not forefront. That the '82 version had actors of Russel's and David's calibers (among others) made a difference as well.

The effects affected my wife a lot, plus the dogs dying. Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to get her to watch the Carpenter version any time soon. But I'm watching her closely just the same...
