I quit drinking going on seven years ago, just to prove to myself that I could. I didn't want to wait until a doctor told me, "Buddy, you should think about not drinking so much." I've never looked back. My only regret was not quitting right after I gave alcohol a try as a teenager.
What I recognize is that although I have a bit of an "addict" in me, it is only a little. I know people who really drink too much and I think they would have a hard time stopping. I think Perry was one of those people. I tried smoking and quit cold turkey. I know people who hate that they smoke and still can't quit.
These experiences taught me to not judge. I'm not special. I just got lucky. Very lucky.
