I lived in SE Texas for a dozen years, and finished university just a couple of miles from Vidor (the linked article near the end of your post).

Racism in Southeast Texas is baked in. It is part of everyday life. I could not have been happier to have escaped that place. I still have lots of friends and family there. It is a GREAT place to do business, but I fucking hate the racism.
