I Lived in Harris County Texas for 12 Years
My mom and sister still live there (many decades now). I couldn’t get away from there fast enough. Racism is baked into Texas. Southeast Texas in particular (see Vidor, about 1 1/2 hours east of Houston) is endemically racist. It is where the aging minister’s wife will casually mention, in her sweet Texas drawl, that “They (black people) need somewhere to shop, too.” when referring to a grocery store we’ve all known for decades that now has a mostly black clientele. True story.
Southeast Texas is garbage can where the stench of racism has leached into the metal. It needs to be hosed out, scrubbed with heavy duty chemicals (ironically there are plenty of those in Pasadena, Texas, just outside of Houston), and then left in hellish Houston summer sun to dry.
