I have a very good friend who is finishing his master's in history. He uses ChatGPT a lot, but he knows its limitations and sets his expectations accordingly.

He said ChatGPT is excellent for first drafts of material he has written but needs to summarize and/or analyze. If you provide ChatGPT the ability to use other material than strictly the source material, you're going to have problems, because ChatGPT will just make shit up. You have to provide very specific sources and restrictive goals.

His point is that if your expecation is ChatGPT will write your paper for you or allow you to skip the reading, you'll be disapppointed. If you are using it to save time by having ChatGPT do some grunt search and collection work, it will meet your expectations.

I'm not a lawyer nor have I worked in law, but AFAIK the above description is one of the key jobs of a paralegal.
