I grew up with cats at home, and all kinds of animals at the farms in my family. Since I got together with my wife (21 years ago last Friday!) we've had a dog (we're on our third).
We've learned (and my wife 10x more than me) about what dogs do differently, how they perceive the world differently, and particularly in the last 4 years how they (canines) communicate differently than we (primates) do.
Learning to communicate with our dog in ways he understands has helped our relationship grow immensely. It is a constant learning process. It is also a humbling process to learn how inconsistent (from a dog's eyes) we humans can be in communicating (e.g. verbally communicating that we want the dog to come to us, while physically communicating that we don't want him to come).
