I grew up in the US but have lived in Austria for 30 years. My son was born and raised there and is now starting a teaching career.

I had a few opportunities to move back to the US over the decades, but let each pass. Part of that reason is that living in the US is much more dangerous than it used to be. My son would be at more risk not growing up in that environment and then transferring in.

I'm also very thankful my immediate family is here.

My son, an American citizen who has traveled a LOT to the US, has said he would never work as a teacher in the US. The thought of needing a weapon, and/or having to profile your own students would be enough reasons not to take the job. There are several other safety-related reasons. Teacher pay is also better long-term, and benefits across the board are better.
