I clicked on this for a couple of reasons. The ecological reasons but also because I lived for six years in Minnesota and still have a lot of extended family on the "family farm" there.
Ecologically this is a hugely interesting story. Hemp for clothing, paper and rope I've known about for ages. IIRC it was William Randoph Hearst who funded the huge "marijuana scare" (e.g. "Reefer Madness") from about 100 years ago by conflating hemp with cannabis. The reason was that Hearst wanted to eliminate his timber competition. How sad to think what we could have done in the last 100 years! At least it is catching on now.
Personally, it turns out the family farm is 15 minutes away. I'm planning on visiting later this year after a business trip to the area. Do you know are there any facilities the public can visit at the Mdewakanton Band of Dakota's business? It would be interesting to see firsthand!
