I assure you they would. There are slaughterhouses in Europe that are not filled with illegal immigrants. The jobs pay a living wage.
Let me be clear that Europe has problems with illegal workers as well, but nothing close to the problems in the US.
I was completely vegan for nearly 8 years. I still eat almost no meat or dairy. I have done an enormous amount of research into the horrors that are factory farms. This is not about a particular job, it is about the pay.
The women who worked in NYC sweatshops 100 years ago were not Trump voters. The kids who worked in coal mines 100 years ago were not Trump voters.
This is not about Trump. This is about a system designed to create enough economic insecurity to pit poor legal workers against even poorer illegal workers.
From my favorite president:
“It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt
Trump voters today were FDR voters 90 years ago, when they had a choice between a pro-worker Dem and a pro-business Rep. They were Democratic voters up until it became clear that Clinton's turn to the right in the 80s was how the Democratic party would be run from then on.
Chuck Schumer in 2016, "For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.”
How'd that plan work out for Hillary Clinton? The Dems have made it clear that they don't give a shit about blue collar workers and say it loud and clear. Trump doesn't care either, but he is a smart enough politician to lie about and/or give the subject lip service.
As I said in my comment, "Trump and every other president will continue to rant about the symptoms, but none of them is brave enough to address the root causes." So we are making nearly the same prediction.
I don't make a prediction on border crossings. One variable in the complex problem can be suppressed for 4 years and the situation can still be terrible. Maybe Mexico will create big camps and then release a shitton of detainees in summer 2028 to tank whoever is the Republican candidate - while it still being true that total border crossing were down from 2024-2028. That is one of an infinite number of possibilities.
Border crossings were higher under Biden than Trump. Deportations were higher under Obama than under Trump. Both parties are doing nothing to solve the root problems, thus the situation will continue.
It is the US oligarchic capitalist system that is crushing all workers in the US and pitting poor US workers against even poorer migrant workers that is the problem.
