I agree. I think this is the cause of the rise of violence and war. Since the 80s, middle class growth in the US stopped. In Europe it is not as bad, but it has slowed. China is the biggest country with middle-class growth, and also the biggest country NOT pushing for war.
When people get nervous about the future, they try to hold onto whatever they have. We become more tribal. We don't want to give anything to "that black guy," "that jew," "that Mexican immigrant" because we're worried how we'll pay the rent if we have even the slightest emergency. Violence - fighting for those scraps - is the next step.
Until we stop pushing all our new wealth into a tiny minority at the top, things are going to get worse.
