Having been a dog owner for 15 1/2 years (sadly until last month when my slightly more furry son died), I have often wondered how I would perceive the world if my sense of smell were like a dog — orders of magnitude stronger than my sense of sight. I wouldn’t need to “see” someone to know they are near, much like in an elevator in old European office buildings, but expanded to someone entering the flat downstairs. Would I be able to precisely sense how far away something is just by smell?
