Great article that I can relate to very much, even if I can’t speak to the black experience — particularly not in East Texas. The things you heard and felt, particularly the guilt are all very familiar to me.

You have to live life for yourself first and foremost. You don’t need to feel guilty for finding a better place and staying there (physically, emotionally and/or intellectually), even if you can’t bring others with you or convince them to come with.
