Great article and the answer here is also easy. In the West, particularly in the US, money drives politics, and AIPAC has a LOT of money. The politicians know that Israel is committing genocide, but they also know it is almost assuredly career-ending to publically say that.

The politicians ALSO know that history will show them to be complicit in genocide. If they are lucky, it will be after they are dead. US politicians are not only complicit in war crimes and genocide, they are breaking US law by supplying Israel with armaments.

Therefore it is "necessary" (politically, not morally or legally) to relativize everything Israel does to "muddy the waters" to creat plausible deniablilty for all those politicians supporting Israel's genocide.
