For all the reasons you listed my wife and I are planning on replacing our gasoline car with a gasoline/electric hybrid. 95% of our driving can be expected to done electrically, with the gasoline for the 5% AND for the "unexpected" (e.g. detours) in the 95%.

I follow automotive news (because it interests) me. I've watched all-electric range and top speed climb significantly each year, while at the same time avg. battery size increase and battery cost and weight decrease. We just paid off our car, so we'll enjoy no payments for a couple of years while the slopes of all those trends are still steep, then we'll hop into the hybrid world.

Or maybe earlier just cuz I love cars and car shopping. :-)
