Because of my work I have to read/write/converse a LOT in English. So even after 30 years in Austria I STILL (to my shame) have this same issue with German.

In English you can change the verb or adjective in the middle of the sentence and it still makes sense. This doesn't work in most foreign languages, where lots of words are declinated and nouns all have genders.
