As a consulting engineer for multiple decades, I totally relate to this. Especially as a young engineer, I earned REALLY well, and spend REALLY badly. About 1/2 a career ago I realized that either I had to continue to massively increase my income every year forever, or I had to change my spending habits. I chose the latter.
I live since then below my income and VERY well. Very much the "wanting what I have" rather than the never ending cycle of "having what I want."
My relationships ar better, my health is better, my waistline smaller, my biceps larger and my stress level MUCH lower.
