Although I'm really happy for your nice feelings for your grandmother now, I have to wonder why she didn't give you that book when she got it. It had to have been years ago when she was still fully functional. You could have had all those years.

My dad died young. I loved him but we were never close. His mom was a grandmother to me just like your grandmother was to you, except that I never got a book, even though she was living at our house for several years until she moved into a retirement place (5 minutes away).

Being fair to your grandmother (and mine and my father), times have changed. Older generations were discouraged from showing their feelings.

The lesson I take from your very touching story is to let the people who are important to me know they are important to me - right now. We never know how long we have. I could get hit by a truck on the way to buy someone a book.
