A lot of the original pilgrims to the US were religious puritans. IMO it skewed the moral basis of the country.

America is huge, so a huge percentage of the population has never traveled abroad, and even fewer have lived abroad. American culture is exported, and with few exceptions there is not a reciprocal import of culture. As a result, most Americans have no idea how puritanical the US is compared to the rest of the world.
